Cosmetic Dentistry & Teeth Whitening
Advances on dental technology have enabled dentists to improve the appearance of a person’s teeth and mouth. Cosmetic dentistry is more popular than before – with treatments that can rejuvenate your smile and overall appearance. Aside from its aesthetic applications, cosmetic dentistry also has restorative benefits that can aid in retaining the natural function of teeth.
Dr. Zofia Wojt, D.D.S. brings together modern dental tools and an in-depth knowledge of cosmetic dentistry to provide Newmarket and the surrounding areas with beautiful smiles. We offer a full range of cosmetic services that include:
- Whitening
- Tooth Reshaping
- Veneers
- Bridges
- Bonding
Whitening
Painless and very affordable, teeth whitening or bleaching is one of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures available. Effective bleaching lightens your teeth and helps remove stains and discolouration.
Having clean, white teeth is not necessarily a dental health issue, but yellow and stained teeth give one an unhealthy appearance. This can influence an individual’s smile quotient, the frequency and willingness to smile, which can definitely affect one’s social interactions and self-esteem. Therefore, you could say that having beautiful white teeth contributes to your mental health.
Whitening Methods
There are many different methods of teeth whitening, some are in-office procedures, some are at-home treatments, and some combine both to get the desired level of whiteness. Teeth that are too white can be distracting and appear unnatural. Getting just the right brightness depends on the treatment time and the dentist’s experience in handling whitening treatments.
While you can purchase over-the-counter home whitening kits at your local drugstore, these home treatments are not as effective as the treatments we use in our Newmarket dental office. Home treatments use different methods such as brushing, bleaching strips, trays, bleaching pens, bleaching gel and others.
The main ingredient in the majority of whiteners is hydrogen peroxide. Peroxide is a safe bleaching agent for your mouth. It reacts with the chemicals that make up your enamel forming bubbles that lift away stains. The longer it is left on and the higher the concentration, the whiter the teeth will get.
If left on too long and done without the supervision of a dentist, it can sometimes lead to temporary tooth sensitivity. These at-home methods are not as effective as our in-office treatments because we have advanced bleaching systems that use light to accelerate the whitening process. This shortens your treatment time and gives you whiter teeth and a brighter smile faster.
We can also do monitored home whitening treatments with custom trays that are effective for certain individuals.
Tooth Reshaping
Also called enamel shaping, this process can yield immediate effects and is typically pain-free. By removing and filing certain portions of the enamel, the dentist can form the tooth into a more favorable shape.
Bonding
Bonding is done to improve or repair a tooth that has been severely chipped, broken or stained. Tooth-coloured materials are adhered to the tooth to enhance its appearance and give it a more natural look.
Bridges
Used to replace one or more missing teeth, dental bridges are false teeth that are fused between two porcelain crowns.
Veneers
Veneers are used to cover the teeth’s front surface and are made from porcelain or resin composite. These wafer-thin shells are custom-made to bond completely to the teeth; improving the size, shape and colour.
Benefits of Cosmetic Dentistry
Cosmetic dentistry is more than just having a whiter shade of teeth or perfectly aligned teeth. Improving the smile can complement the oral and general health of a patient. An increase in self-esteem and the newfound confidence that a brighter smile can bring will also work wonders in other aspects of your well-being.
Aside from the aesthetic advantage, cosmetic dentistry enables patients to speak and to chew properly. A better bite can also improve the face, taking years off a previously haggard appearance. With our cosmetic dentistry treatments in Newmarket, the transformation is not only skin-deep, you are invigorated by an improved appearance and the boost in self-image.
